Our History
The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad originates from the original Western Maryland Railway which operated from 1852 to 1983.
Today, we operate our trains on the Western Maryland “Connellsville Extension”, with our Western terminus in Frostburg, Maryland.
In 1981, the Allegany Central Railroad began running steam and diesel excursions from Cumberland to Frostburg under the watchful eye of Jack Showalter. His two Canadian Pacific G5’s led the charge around Helmstetter’s Curve and up the mountain weekly. At the end of 1991, the SRC began operating under the name “Western Maryland Scenic Railroad”, and the rest is history!
