Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is an IBCCES Certified Autism Center!

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad has completed the process of becoming a Certified Autism Center, which is a designation awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) that demonstrates the organization’s commitment to ensuring guests and families with children who have autism and sensory disorders have the best possible experience. As part of this certification, the WMSR:

  • Staff is fully trained and knowledgeable to ensure the best possible guest experience

  • A quiet space available upon request

  • Sensory bags available upon request

  • Noise reduction earmuffs upon request

  • Sunglasses upon request

  • Recommend visiting during the offseason if you have flexible travel plans

Our Pacific Waters passenger car is thoughtfully designed to provide a welcoming and accommodating environment for guests and families with children who have autism and sensory disorders. Understanding that sensory sensitivities can make traditional travel experiences overwhelming, we've integrated a range of features tailored to create a calming and supportive atmosphere. The car is equipped with noise-canceling headphones, soothing lighting options, and comfortable seating that can be adjusted to individual needs. These enhancements help to minimize sensory overload, allowing families to travel with greater ease and comfort.

In addition to the physical adjustments, our staff is specially trained to offer personalized support, ensuring that each journey is as smooth as possible. We recognize the importance of predictability and routine, so we provide clear, step-by-step guidance throughout the trip and are always available to address any concerns. By combining thoughtful design with attentive service, the Pacific Waters car aims to make every journey a positive and stress-free experience for guests with sensory needs, allowing them to enjoy their travels with greater peace of mind.
