Step back in time as you experience the magic of rail travel behind legendary steam locomotive No. 1309 on weekends—or enjoy a classic diesel-powered ride on weekdays. The Frostburg Flyer departs from Cumberland, Maryland, carrying you deep into the scenic Allegheny Mountains on a route filled with natural beauty and historic charm. Your adventure winds through the dramatic valley of the Narrows, rounds the world-famous Helmstetter’s Curve and climbs nearly 1,000 feet in elevation as the train works its way up the mountain. Along the journey, you’ll cross sparkling creeks and streams, glide over towering bridges, and pass through the iconic 916-foot Brush Tunnel, all while taking in the sights, sounds, and rhythmic chuffs of a mighty steam engine at work.
Upon arrival in Frostburg, you’ll enjoy a 90-minute layover, with complimentary shuttle service on weekend departures to help you explore the town’s inviting shops, cafés, and restaurants before re-boarding for your return trip.
Seating aboard the Frostburg Flyer is assigned, so advance reservations are strongly recommended to keep your group together. Boarding begins 30 minutes prior to departure, and the full round-trip experience lasts approximately 4.5 hours, including the layover.
Don’t miss your chance to ride behind steam locomotive No. 1309 on Saturdays and Sundays, the largest regularly operating steam locomotive in the country.

Coach Class on the Frostburg Flyer offers an affordable and comfortable way to take in the natural beauty of Mountain Maryland. Settle into our air-conditioned coach cars and enjoy a narrated journey as the train ascends into the scenic Allegheny Mountains, highlighting the region’s history and landscape along the way.
Coach Class features open seating, giving you the freedom to choose any available seat. If you’re traveling with a large group, we recommend arriving early to ensure you can sit together.
During your trip, be sure to stop by the Trackside Treats concession bar, where our onboard services attendant is ready to serve a selection of snacks, beverages, and alcoholic drinks available for purchase. Enjoy the ride—and the refreshments—as you take in the views from the rails.

Your ticket includes one made-to-order entrée, crafted onboard for quality and freshness. Sit back and enjoy the scenic Mountain Maryland views as your dedicated server delivers your meal and beverages directly to your table in our classic diner car. Gratuity is not included in your ticket price.

Ride the rails in true luxury and style. Please note that full meal service is not included with Lounge Class seating, and this experience is reserved for passengers 21 and older.

A curated selection of craft cocktails, along with beer, wine, and soft drinks, will be available for purchase. Simply visit or speak with your dedicated onboard bartender for service.
Please note that full meal service is not included with Dome Class seating aboard the Frostburg Flyer. However, guests will enjoy complimentary, freshly prepared charcuterie boards served at the start of the excursion, courtesy of the railroad.

Terms and Conditions
Refunds & Credits: Tickets are fully refundable up to 14 days before your scheduled excursion. Within two weeks of departure, in-house credit will be issued for future use within the same calendar year. Same-day cancellations and missed trains are non-refundable and not eligible for credit.
Arrival & Boarding: Please arrive at least 45 minutes before departure to allow time for check-in and boarding instructions.
Seating: All seating is assigned at the time of booking.
Policies & Restrictions:
- Outside alcohol is not permitted onboard.
- Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited on all trains.
- Only service animals are allowed on board; pets are not permitted.
- Steam Locomotive #1309: Steam Locomotive #1309 is scheduled to lead our trains Saturdays and Sundays on most weekends in 2025. Please check our official social media pages for the latest schedule updates and any changes.
- Dome, Lounge & Lunch Class soft drinks are free of charge.
ADA acommodations:
- Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of our equipment, not all of our train cars are ADA-accessible. Wheelchairs can only be accommodated in Standard Coach at our Cumberland Depot (13 Canal Street). Please contact our ticketing office prior to booking for wheelchair/mobility accommodations. There is no ADA accessibility for deboarding at the Frostburg Depot (19 Depot Street).
