Ride the Rails, Celebrate History, and Experience Maryland Railfest 2026!

Join the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad for Maryland Railfest 2026, a three-day celebration of steam, diesel, railroad history, and family fun in historic downtown Cumberland. From September 18–20, experience one of the East Coast's premier railroad festivals with exclusive excursions, rare equipment, shop tours, vendors, and unforgettable railfan experiences.

One of this year's biggest highlights is the return of the legendary Helmstetter's Highball, featuring the largest operating steam locomotive on the East Coast, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad No. 1309. Travel behind this engineering giant to the iconic Helmstetter's Curve in your choice of Coach Class, or charter the beautifully restored Baltimore & Ohio No. 905 Wayside Observation Car for your group of up to eight passengers per departure.

Making its long-awaited return to service is the iconic GP30 No. 501, back on the rails after an extensive rewiring project completed by WMSR's shop forces in Ridgeley, West Virginia. Railfans can see the locomotive in action throughout the weekend, including the return of the popular Fireball Photo Experience on Saturday evening, offering photographers the chance to capture No. 501 in dramatic nighttime scenes.

New for 2026, climb aboard the Ridgeley Rocket for a behind-the-scenes journey from Cumberland to Knobmount Yard and back. Available in both Coach and Caboose seating, this exclusive excursion provides a unique look into WMSR's railroad operations and facilities.

The excitement begins Friday morning as the Frostburg Flyer departs Cumberland at 11:30 AM, officially kicking off Railfest weekend with a scenic journey through the Allegheny Mountains. Friday evening brings another fan favorite—the wildly popular Murder Mystery Dinner Train—combining suspense, fine dining, and historic rail travel into an unforgettable experience.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can explore shop tours in Ridgeley, West Virginia, offering an inside look at the ongoing restoration of Mountain Thunder No. 734 and other railroad preservation projects. Outside Cumberland Station at Canal Place, dozens of vendors will feature railroad collectibles, handcrafted goods, model train displays, local artisans, and delicious food and beverages.

In celebration of America's 250th Anniversary, visitors can also see the patriotic America250 SW7 No. 111 on display throughout the festival.

Whether you're chasing steam behind No. 1309, photographing the return of No. 501, exploring restoration projects, shopping local vendors, or simply making memories with family, Maryland Railfest 2026 offers an unforgettable weekend celebrating the past, present, and future of American railroading.
