Georges Creek Rail Rehabilitation Project

This project will restore the Georges Creek Division Railroad's access to the Big Vein, reopening a historic rail corridor for coal and other freight traffic. Reestablishing this connection will strengthen regional freight transportation, support economic development, and preserve critical railroad infrastructure for future industrial growth.
Potomac River & Canal Inlet Bridge Repairs
Completed
This project restored the Potomac River & Canal Inlet Bridge, reuniting the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with the national rail network and its critical interchange with CSX. Reestablishing this connection ensures reliable access for equipment movements, supports future freight and passenger operations, and preserves a vital piece of regional rail infrastructure.
Number Nine Siding Rehabilitation
Completed
The No. Nine Siding Rehabilitation Project restored a key section of railroad infrastructure, providing greater operational flexibility in Frostburg and reducing congestion during train movements. The completed siding allows for more efficient train scheduling and enables single-locomotive operations when appropriate, improving overall railroad efficiency.
The WMSR relies on carefully engineered and maintained tracks, bridges, tunnels, and road crossings to operate safely. Like many railroads, WMSR is constantly planning and prioritizing its capital needs to make sure its infrastructure is in a state of good repair. This page features some of the larger infrastructure projects the WMSR has completed or has underway. Many of these projects rely on support from WMSR stakeholders to help share the costs of the improvements. Past projects have been made possible by the State of Maryland, Allegany County, and other partners.
