Every great journey has a soundtrack. On the Frostburg Flyer, it's the rhythm of steel wheels on iron rail, the echo of a steam whistle through a mountain hollow, and the low rumble of 1309 working hard up the grade.
Departing from Cumberland, Maryland, the Frostburg Flyer carries you deep into the Allegheny Mountains on one of the most scenic rail corridors in the East. The route winds through the dramatic cut of the Narrows, bends around the legendary Helmstetter's Curve, crosses sparkling mountain streams, and climbs nearly 1,000 feet in elevation before threading through the historic 916-foot Brush Tunnel, all in just over an hour.
At the top of the mountain, Frostburg awaits. Spend 90 minutes exploring the town's shops, cafés, and restaurants, with complimentary shuttle service available on weekend departures. Then re-board for the return trip down the mountain, with the valley spread out before you.
No. 1309 — The Largest Regularly Operating Steam Locomotive in the Country — leads the Frostburg Flyer every Saturday and Sunday.
Weekday departures operate under diesel power. Dome and Lounge Class seating is assigned, and advance reservations are recommended, especially for groups. Boarding opens 30 minutes before departure; the full round trip runs approximately 4.5 hours including the Frostburg layover.

Coach Class on the Frostburg Flyer offers an affordable and comfortable way to take in the natural beauty of Mountain Maryland. Settle into our air-conditioned coach cars and enjoy a narrated journey as the train ascends into the scenic Allegheny Mountains, highlighting the region’s history and landscape along the way.
Coach Class features open seating, giving you the freedom to choose any available seat. If you’re traveling with a large group, we recommend arriving early to ensure you can sit together.
During your trip, be sure to stop by the Trackside Treats concession bar, where our onboard services attendant is ready to serve a selection of snacks, beverages, and alcoholic drinks available for purchase. Enjoy the ride—and the refreshments—as you take in the views from the rails.

Your ticket includes one made-to-order entrée, crafted onboard for quality and freshness. Sit back and enjoy the scenic Mountain Maryland views as your dedicated server delivers your meal and beverages directly to your table in our classic diner car. Gratuity is not included in your ticket price.

A curated selection of craft cocktails, along with beer, wine, and soft drinks, will be available for purchase. Simply visit or speak with your dedicated onboard bartender for service.
Please note that full meal service is not included with Dome Class seating aboard the Frostburg Flyer. However, guests will enjoy complimentary, freshly prepared charcuterie boards served at the start of the excursion, courtesy of the railroad.

Terms and Conditions
Tickets & Cancellations Tickets are fully refundable up to 14 days before departure. Cancellations within 14 days will receive in-house credit valid for use within the same calendar year. Same-day cancellations and no-shows are non-refundable and not eligible for credit.
Arrival & Boarding Please arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure to allow time for check-in and boarding. Late arrivals may forfeit their reservation without refund.
Seating All seats are assigned at the time of booking. Seating changes are not guaranteed after purchase.
Onboard Policies
Outside alcohol is not permitted onboard.
Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited on all trains.
Only certified service animals are permitted; pets are not allowed.
Soft drinks are complimentary in Dome, Lounge, and Lunch Class.
Steam Locomotive No. 1309 No. 1309 is scheduled to lead the Frostburg Flyer on Saturdays and Sundays on most weekends in 2026. Follow our social media pages for the latest schedule updates.
ADA Accommodations Due to the historic nature of our equipment, not all passenger cars are ADA-accessible. Wheelchairs can be accommodated in Standard Coach at our Cumberland Depot (13 Canal Street) only. There is no ADA accessibility for deboarding at the Frostburg Depot (19 Depot Street). Please contact our ticketing office before booking to arrange mobility accommodations.
Equipment Western Maryland Scenic Railroad reserves the right to substitute equipment, locomotives, and passenger cars at any time due to mechanical or safety needs.
